Do You Have Noisy Knees in Yoga?

presspauseuk

Maybe you can hear your knees snap, crackling and popping as you take a Warrior 1 or malasana , squat? Good news it is knee crepitus and usually not a problem at all.

What is it?

Air bubbles and the popping sound usually comes from air seeping into the soft tissue, finding its way into the area around the joint and causing tiny bubbles in the synovial fluid. You can often hear it when cracking your knuckles.

Tendons or the soft tissues moving over bony structures. As your muscles and the tendons move over the bones it may create friction and it can make a noise.

Changes in our body such as wear and tear on our joints as we grow older, and bone growths.

What Do the Studies Say on Knee Noises?

41% of the population experience knee crepitus so that is nearly half of us. Me included!

36% of pain free, uninjured people experience knee creptitus

815 of people with knee osteoarthritus have knee crepitus.

What Does This Mean as You Practice Yoga?

If your knees make a little noise on certain deep flexion poses don't panic!

In general knee noises are completely normal. These noises don't automatically mean there is something wrong with you knees.

It's not usually something for you to worry about especially if there is no pain associated with it.

Yoga is good for your knees and in fact it is one of the best ways to keep your knees healthy even with osteoarthritis. Movement is generally good for you!

When Should You Be Concerned?

If the noises come with pain, swelling or following an injury then always ask your GP or Physio. Otherwise keep moving and see you in class!
